Visiting a friend in the hospital this weekend I watched the nurses at their work. I experienced a twinge of regret that I do not perform the kind of labor they do – so real and honestly useful. I kept watching and remembered why I don’t. I just do not have what it takes to take that work on. I am grateful that there are those who do. I can think of no other field where a person would be expected to become so educated and skilled and also be expected to deal with the kind of work that many consider demeaning. Administer drugs and understand procedures and still change the sheets and deal with bodily fluids. Nurses are amazing and today I am grateful for the nurses who are so capably caring for my friend.
